1. What can you tell us about Vons?

About Vons

  • Vons is a Southern Californian and Southern Nevada supermarket chain owned by Albertsons (See About Albertsons). 
  • Charles Von der Ahe founded Vons in 1906.  
  • Vons sells bakery, dairy, deli, frozen foods, general grocery, meat, pharmacy, produce, seafood, snacks, liquor, and floral.

2. Why do you want to work for VONS?

Tip! Make sure you sound excited when answering this question. 

Possible answers are 

  • You enjoy the service and the exceptional value you get at Vons and because of this, you would be proud to represent them.
  • Say you want a career in retail and feel Vons is a great place to learn. Follow up with the fact that you are impressed that Vons has been in business for over 100 years. 
  • If you are applying for a customer-facing position then state you are outgoing and feel it will benefit both you and Vons. 
  • If you are interviewing for a position where you are on your feet all day say you would like a job that keeps you active. 

3. What hours can you work?

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more relaxed you are with your hours, the better your chance of landing the job.
  • State that you understand if you need to work on weekends and holidays. 

4. Where do you see yourself in five years?

  • Answering this question correctly is important as it shows you have ambition and are goal-oriented.
  • Your career goals should be aligned with the company’s business objectives. For example, stating you would like to see yourself in retail or customer service will make you sound like your career goals are aligned with the company’s business objectives.

5. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

6. What is your greatest weakness?

  • You should not deny that you have a weakness or state strengths as a weakness (I am a perfectionist or I work too hard and neglect my friends and family). Instead, think of a weakness that is required but not critical for the job and state that as your weakness.
  • When you state your weakness make sure you include what you are doing to overcome that weakness. For example, I have a fear of public speaking and enrolled in a public speaking class to overcome my fear.

7. Why did you leave your last job? 

The only answer to this question is to say that you have learned all you can from your last job and are looking for new opportunities to learn and grow in your career.

Here is a recommended answer:

  • “I enjoyed my last job, however, I felt growth was minimal and I was no longer learning. I want to explore new challenges”.   

Don’t Say

  • Anything negative about your former boss/employer.
  • Complaints about the salary.
  • You left on bad terms.

8. What are your salary expectations

  • This is a stressful question because if you ask for too much, you will not get the job and if you ask for too little, they will gladly underpay you.
  • Be sure to research salary expectations for your role before you go into the interview. There are plenty of sites that will discuss salary ranges.
  • If you don’t know what to say, ask what the salary range is?  You can then counter with the high end of the range. 

9. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

10. Tell when you went above and beyond for a customer?

Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which, in turn, generates more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

Here are two examples

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it, and I was able to get it for them
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain, and one day, there was a senior citizen at the restaurant who had finished his meal. It started to rain, and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had one, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

11. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long for checkout.
  • The grocery store is clean both inside and outside.
  • The inventory is well stocked and supplied.
  • Customers receive friendly service.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Most interview questions at Vons will end by asking if you have any questions about the job or the company. However, don’t be afraid to ask questions throughout the interview. Below are a few prepared questions.

  • What do you like best about working here?
  • How would you describe your ideal candidate for this position?
