About Menards

  • Menards is a home improvement retailer, located in the Midwestern United States.
  • The company is privately held (not traded on the stock market).
  • Their headquarters are in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
  • Menards has over 300 stores which are located in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Kentucky.
  • It is the third-largest home improvement retailer only behind The Home Depot and Lowe’s.
  • John Menard founded the company in 1960 and incorporated it in 1962.

3. Why do you want to work for Menards?

Possible answers are

  • Say you outgoing and are passionate about home improvement. State you feel a career at Menards will allow you to do both.
  • Mention you would like to grow your career in retail and feel Menards is a great place to do it. Mention you are impressed with the fact that in 2018, Menards was ranked by J.D. Power as “highest in customer satisfaction among home improvement retail stores”.

4. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

5. What is your greatest weakness?

  • You don’t have a weakness.
  • You can’t think of a weakness.
  • Something unrelated to the job. 
  • Do not state a weakness that is critical for the job. 

Do Say

  • Something related to the job but not a deal breaker. 
  • Steps to improve your weakness. 

Example

My greatest weakness is I take criticism too personally. I have learned not to overreact and think about what was said. I have found that I have become a better employee when I learn from feedback.

9. What hours can you work?

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more relaxed you are with your hours, the better your chance of landing the job.
  • State that you understand if you need to work on weekends and holidays. 

10. What are your salary expectations?

  • This is a stressful question because if you ask for too much, you will not get the job and if you ask for too little, they will gladly underpay you.
  • Be sure to research salary expectations for your role before you go into the interview. There are plenty of sites that will discuss salary ranges.
  • If you don’t know what to say, ask what the salary range is?  You can then counter with the high end of the range. 

11. Why should we hire you?

  • Have a look at the job description, and find the key skills and experience required for the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and experience that are required to do the position. Note your answer needs to demonstrate that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team), and that you are the best person for the role.

12. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The staff is friendly and always willing to help the customer find her needs.
  • Customers are not waiting in line for long periods at checkout.
  • The store has adequate inventory.

13. Tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which, in turn, generates more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

Here are two examples

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it, and I was able to get it for them
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain, and one day, there was a senior citizen at the restaurant who had finished his meal. It started to rain, and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had one, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

14. How would you deal with a difficult customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

15. Do you have any questions for us?

  • What do you like best about working here?
  • How would you describe your ideal candidate for this position?
  • What about this position is the most important?
  • How would you measure my success and what could I do to succeed in your expectations?
  • Which part of the position has the steepest learning curve? What can I do in order to get up to speed quickly?

What should I wear to an interview at Menards?

  • If you are interviewing for a non-management position then dress business casually.
