  • The grocery store was named for the former Chief Executive Officer, Robert Mariano.
  • Mariano’s is owned by Kroger.
  • Vero is Mariano’s in-house coffee and gelato counter. Customers can order a variety of coffee drinks.
  • Oki Sushi is Mariano’s in-house sushi counter.
  • Mariano’s has Todd’s BBQ.  At Todd’s customers can have any meat they’ve purchased from Mariano’s Meat Department grilled while they shop.
  • The grocery store has an oyster bar and a liquor bar.
  • Mariano’s offers a cheese shop where hard-to-find cheeses can be acquired.

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more relaxed you are with your hours, the better your chance of landing the job.

Why should we hire you?

  • Have a reread of the job description and list out the skills required.  Reassure the interviewer that you have those skills.
  • For example, suppose you were on a Mariano’s Cashier Interview.  The job description will probably want someone who works well under pressure, pays great attention to detail, and has excellent communication skills.  You need to reassure the interviewer that you have the proper skills to be a cashier.

How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long at checkout.
  • The grocery store is clean both inside and outside.
  • Inventory is well stocked and supplied.
  • Customers receive friendly and helpful service.

What are your salary expectations?

  • It is a good idea to review salary ranges so you know what to ask for.
  • If you are applying for an entry-level position then odds are it will be minimum wage.
  • You can always flip the question and ask what is the salary range and ask for the upper end of the range.

What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

What is your greatest weakness?

It’s ok to have weaknesses but make sure you discuss how you are working towards fixing your weakness.

  • For example, suppose your weakness is public speaking.  Tell the interviewer you have a fear of public speaking but you are overcoming this by enrolling in Toastmasters — a public speaking course.

Tip! Do not state a skill that is critical for the job as your greatest weakness.

Name a conflict you had with your boss and how did you resolve it?

It is only natural to have occasional conflicts at work.  The important thing is how you and your colleague came up with a positive outcome.

For example, when I worked in retail, I stocked shelves and placed the items that I thought had the most marketing appeal at eye level.

My manager instructed me to put perishable products or merchandise with high-profit margins at eye level for an average person when stocking shelves.

While discussing this issue, I paid attention to what my manager said and did not argue. I admitted my mistake and stocked shelves the way my manager asked me to. I also felt I gained a valuable lesson in marketing.

Can you tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which, in turn, generates more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

Here are two examples

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it, and I was able to get it for them
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain, and one day, there was a senior citizen at the restaurant who had finished his meal. It started to rain, and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had one, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
