2. What can you tell us about Hy-Vee?

About Hy-Vee

  • Hy-Vee is a supermarket chain located throughout the Midwestern United States.
  • Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg founded the supermarket in 1930 in Beaconsfield, Iowa.
  • Hy-Vee Market Grille is a chain of restaurants within its stores.
  • Hy-Vee Aisles Online is their online shopping store.
  • In 2016, Hy-Vee began opening clothing boutiques featuring Tesco’s F&F brand in select larger locations.
  • In 2017, Hy-Vee became the exclusive retailer in its service area for sports nutrition products marketed by Mark Wahlberg.
  • Finally, Hy-Vee Fuel Saver + Perks is a loyalty program that allows customers to earn discounts on fuel.

3. Why do you want to work for Hy-Vee?

Possible answers are

  • Say you would love to work for one of America’s Best Employers for Veterans as named by Forbes.
  • Mention you like the fact that Hy-Vee is employee-owned by direct stockholders. This gives employees more say in how the store is run.

4. Why should we hire you?

  • Have a look at the job description, and find the key skills and experience required for the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and experience that are required to do the position. Note your answer needs to demonstrate that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team), and that you are the best person for the role.

5. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

6. What is your greatest weakness?

Example

7. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Having a five-year goal shows you are ambitious.

The trick to answering this question is to show how your five-year goal will benefit Hy-Vee in the long run.

  • For example, perhaps you want to become a pharmacist or pharmacy technician. Hy-Vee has a pharmacy.
  • Perhaps you want a career in retail management

  • Unfortunately, this can be a trick question as they may be looking for things you didn’t like in your last job.
  • The best answer is to say that you enjoyed everything about your last job, however, you feel that you have learned all you can in that role and are now looking for new challenges.

9. What hours can you work?

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more relaxed you are with your hours, the better your chance of landing the job.
  • State that you understand if you need to work on weekends and holidays. 

10. How would you deal with a difficult customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

11. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long at checkout.
  • The grocery store is clean both inside and outside.
  • Inventory is well stocked and supplied.
  • Customers receive friendly and helpful service.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

How to Dress for a Hy-Vee Interview

Entry-Level

  • Dress business casually if you are interviewing for an entry-level position.  Do not wear shorts and avoid wearing jeans.

Management

  • Dress formally or business casually if you are interviewing for a management position.  Blazers and dark pants are a safe choice, as well as wrap dresses for females. Avoid sportswear clothes.  

Colors

  • Blue tells employers that you’re credible and trustworthy.
  • Black shows leadership and is great if you’re going for a senior position.
  • Red sends a message that you’re assertive and works well in fields like sales.
  • Orange is apparently the worst color to wear for a job interview, with it being linked to unprofessionalism.

  • An open interview is where you apply in person and they interview you on the spot. If you study the questions above and dress well you will do fine.

Does Hy-vee Drug test

  • It is more than likely that Hy-Vee will drug test employees, depending on the store’s location and role. For example, if you are interviewing for a pharmacy job, you will likely be drug tested, whereas a cashier may not be required to take a drug test.

How long are Hy-Vee interviews

  • For entry-level positions, such as cashier or stocker, interviews may last around 15 to 30 minutes. For more managerial positions, they may be longer and more in-depth, up to 45 minutes to an hour.
