1. Tell us about yourself?

  • While it’s acceptable to discuss your hobbies and interests during an interview, it’s best to keep such discussions brief. Instead, prioritize discussing related work experience as it can help you stand out from the competition.

2. What can you tell us about GNC?

About GNC
  • GNC offers an assortment of health, wellness, and performance products, including protein, performance supplements, weight management supplements, vitamins, herbs and greens, wellness supplements, health and beauty, food and drink, and other general merchandise. 
  • GNC is headquartered in Pittsburgh PA.
  • GNCs roots can be traced back to 1935 to Pittsburgh PA where David Shakarian opened his first store called Lackzoom. 
  • Today, GNC is the largest global specialty retailer of nutritional products; including vitamin, mineral, herbal, and other specialty supplements and sports nutrition, diet, and energy products.
  • GNC has more than 4,800 retail locations throughout the United States (including more than 1,000 franchise and 1,200 Rite Aid store-within-a-store locations) and franchise operations in 46 international markets.

3. Why do you want to work for GNC?

  • Tell the interviewer you enjoy health and nutrition and will enjoy helping others meet their health goals.
  • If you are working in a store say you are outgoing which will allow you to interact well with customers.

4. Why should GNC hire you?

  • Have a look at the job description, and find the key skills and experience required for the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and experience that are required to do the position. Note your answer needs to demonstrate that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team), and that you are the best person for the role.

5. Who are our competitors?

Several Competitors include

  • Herbalife, Vitacost, Vitamin Shoppe, Vitamin World, and Amazon.

6. What motivates you?

Employers ask this question because they want to see your resiliency, determination on how you’ll handle challenges and setbacks.

Say

  • Meeting deadlines, targets, or goals.
  • Mentoring and coaching others.
  • Learning new things.
  • Coming up with creative ideas to improve something or make something new.
  • Working well as part of a team.
  • Finding a way to solve a problem or overcome a challenge.

7. Why did you leave your last job?

The only answer to this question is to say that you have learned all you can from your last job and are looking for new opportunities to learn and grow in your career.

Here is a recommended answer:

“I enjoyed my last job, however, I felt growth was minimal and I was no longer learning. I want to explore new challenges”.  

Don’t Say

  • Anything negative about your former boss/employer.
  • Complaints about the salary.
  • You left on bad terms.

8. What are your salary expectations?

  • This is a stressful question because if you ask for too much, you will not get the job and if you ask for too little, they will gladly underpay you.
  • Be sure to research salary expectations for your role before you go into the interview. There are plenty of sites that will discuss salary ranges.
  • If you don’t know what to say, ask what the salary range is?  You can then counter with the high end of the range. 

9. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

10. What is your greatest weakness?

Don’t Say

  • You don’t have a weakness.
  • You can’t think of a weakness.
  • Something unrelated to the job. 
  • Do not state a weakness that is critical for the job. 

Do Say

  • Something related to the job but not a deal breaker. 
  • Steps to improve your weakness. 

Example

My greatest weakness is I take criticism too personally. I have learned not to overreact and think about what was said. I have found that I have become a better employee when I learn from feedback.

11. How would you deal with an upset customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

12. Tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which, in turn, generates more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

Here are two examples

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it, and I was able to get it for them
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain, and one day, there was a senior citizen at the restaurant who had finished his meal. It started to rain, and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had one, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

13. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The staff is friendly and always willing to help the customer find her needs.
  • Customers are not waiting in line for long periods at checkout.
  • The store has adequate inventory.

14. Do you have any questions for us?

  • What do you like best about working here?
  • How would you describe your ideal candidate for this position?
  • What about this position is the most important?
  • How would you measure my success and what could I do to exceed your expectations?
  • Which part of the position has the steepest learning curve? What can I do to get up to speed quickly?
  • What opportunities will I have to learn and grow?
