Section 1 – Introduction to Walmart

An introduction to Walmart is your first step to preparing for the Walmart Interview. In this section, we will define Walmart, and discuss the store formats, the supply chain, and private label brands.

What is Walmart

Walmart is the biggest retailer in the world, millions of customers daily benefit from Walmart’s low prices, which helps them live better and save money. Remember, customers save money when shopping at Walmart, which makes people’s lives better. This is a valid point when asked why you want to work at Walmart.

Store Formats

Walmart Discount Store: The first and most common format of Walmart is the Discount Store, which occupies about 106,000 square feet. Products including electronics, apparel, toys, furniture, personal care products, tools, and more are available in these stores.

Walmart Supercenter: Walmart Supercenters occupy around 182,000 square feet, and offer customers a one-stop-shop shopping experience from general goods to groceries.

Walmart Neighborhood Market: This smaller store format offers customers pharmacy, affordable groceries, and merchandise.

Sam’s Club is a chain of membership-only retail warehouse clubs operated by Walmart Inc. Walmart’s founder, Sam Walton, named the store Sam’s Wholesale Club, later renamed Sam’s Club. Sam’s Club offers bulk quantities of products at discounted prices. The stores carry many items, including groceries, electronics, furniture, clothing, etc.

Distribution Center

Walmart’s distribution centers ship general merchandise and dry groceries to its consumers daily. Each center covers over 1 million square feet and has 600+ staff members. Every distribution center supports 90 to 100 stores in a 150+ mile radius.

There are six disaster distribution centers, located across the country. These centers quickly help communities during natural disasters.

Since 2017, Walmart has worked with Symbotic to optimize its supply chain. Symbotic is a robotics company automating warehouse tasks. These tasks include sorting, storing, retrieving, and pallet packing.

Walmart has recently introduced consolidation centers. The consolidation centers triple the volume flow between suppliers and distribution centers. As of this writing, there are two consolidation centers which are in Lebanon, PA, and Colton, Calif.

Walmart Private Label Brands

Walmart launched its private-label brands to compete with Target and Amazon. Several Brands include

  • George – men’s casual and dress clothing, shoes, and accessories.
  • Terra & Sky – plus size women’s clothing.
  • Time and Tru – offers a range of affordable and stylish women’s clothing and accessories.
  • Wonder Nation – children’s clothing, shoes, and accessories.

Walmart’s private-label dog food brand, often recognized as “Ol’ Roy,” holds a special connection to the company’s founder, Sam Walton. Named after Sam Walton’s beloved hunting dog, Ol’ Roy has become a fixture in the pet food aisle.

Section 2 – Walmart e-Commerce

The Walmart app provides users with a versatile tool encompassing virtual try-ons, efficient in-store navigation, secure payments, exclusive offers, list management, price checks, registry organization for life events, and pharmacy services, making the shopping experience comprehensive and user-friendly.

Walmart Scan & Go allows Walmart+ members to scan the item they want to buy and then checkout with a single barcode at the checkout.

Walmart’s Curbside Pickup service allows customers to order online and have their orders delivered to their car.

In many markets, Walmart customers can get NextDay Delivery for free for orders over $35.00.

Walmart GoLocal is a delivery-as-a-service business. This means that companies can hire Walmart GoLocal to deliver their products. For example, customers can get Home Depot products delivered to their homes via Walmart GoLocal.

Customers can shop online at Walmart.com for products flagged as Built for Better. Built for Better means buying brands that align with the things that matter to the customer. Examples include products that come from black-owned or women-owned businesses. Another example includes products that are more friendly to the environment.

Section 3 – History

In 1962, Sam Walton established the first Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas, on the straightforward principle of providing high-quality products at reduced costs.

Walmart started trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: WMT) on August 25, 1972. Walmart began paying a dividend in 1974 and has never missed a payment.

In 1994, Walmart made its debut in the Canadian market. Walmart Canada’s head office is in Mississauga, Ontario.

A 1995 study reveals that the average cost of a basket of consumables decreased by 8% in less than a year following Walmart’s Canadian debut.

In 2002, Ryerson University found that Walmart’s presence often increases sales at neighboring small merchants in Canada.

In 2018, Walmart officially changed its name from Wal-Mart to Walmart.

Section 4 – Walmart+

One cannot ignore Amazon’s presence in retail. To counter Amazon Prime, Walmart has come up with Walmart+. Below we will describe its features.

Free Delivery from your store – Walmart+ members get fresh groceries with no delivery fees.

Free shipping with no order minimum – Customers can choose from various eligible items and never pay shipping fees.

Save on Fuel – Members save 10¢ per gallon at 14,000+ locations nationwide including Exxon, Mobil, Walmart & Murphy stations.

Video streaming with Paramount+ – If you get a Walmart+ membership you get a free video streaming account with Paramount+.

Auto Care – Members can get free flat tire repair & free road hazard warranty (potholes, debris, nails, glass, or other sharp objects that can puncture or damage a tire) at Walmart Auto Care Centers nationwide.

Walmart+ Travel – Walmart+ members receive 5% Walmart Cash on hotel bookings, vacations, car rentals, tours, and activities. Additionally, members receive 2% Walmart Cash on air travel. Expedia powers Walmart+ Travel.

Returns from home – If you need to return a product you ordered online, Walmart will pick it up from you without requiring printing labels or repackaging.

Early Access – Members enjoy special prices, product releases, and online Black Friday deals.

Mobile Scan & Go – Walmart+ members can easily scan items on their phones. Once they’ve scanned all their items, they can proceed to the self-checkout, scan the barcode, and then leave.
