  • It’s okay to discuss your hobbies and interests; but, keep it brief. Try to focus on relevant work experience. Remember that having relevant work experience will put you ahead of the competition.

2. Why do you want to work for UNIQLO?

  • If you will be working with customers, state that you possess strong communication skills, enabling you to work effectively with customers.
  • State that you are passionate about fashion and enjoy the products UNIQLO offers.
  • Mention that you would like a job that keeps you active and will enjoy the challenge of working under pressure.

3. Why should UNIQLO hire you?

  • Look at the job description and find the key skills and experience required to do the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and experience required to do the position. Note your answer needs to show that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team) and that you are the best person for the role.

4. What is your greatest strength?

This question is an invitation to explain why you are the best-qualified candidate for this job!

The answer should be broken down into three parts

  • Japanese UNIQLO is a Japanese clothing apparel company.
  • The company was founded in 1949 as a textile manufacturer.
  • Today, UNIQLO is a global brand with over 1000 stores globally.
  • The parent company is Fast Retailing Co., Ltd.
  • The company can trace its roots to clothing shops called “Men’s Shop OS” in Japan in 1949.
  • In May of 1984, it opened a unisex casual wear store called “Unique Clothing Warehouse”.
  • Someone intended to register the brand as a contraction of “unique clothing”. However, due to a registrar’s error, the brand name emerged as UNIQLO, stemming from the misreading of the “C” as a “Q”.

7. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The staff is friendly and always willing to help the customer find what he or she needs.
  • Customers are not waiting in line for long periods at checkout.
  • The store display is well-kept and presented with adequate inventory.

8. How would you deal with a demanding customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Finally, one must not take it personally.  If you get upset, you will take it out on future customers.

9. Can you tell us when you went above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which will, in turn, generate more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a specific dessert in the restaurant. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it and I got it for the customer.   
  • Here’s another example: I worked at a fast-food chain in my last job.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal. The rain started, and he started to worry because he didn’t have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

10. Can you work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays?

  • The more flexible you are with your hours, the better your chance of getting hired, so be flexible!
  • Let the interviewer know if you can work on weekends and holidays.

12. How do you feel about standing on your feet all day?

  • Most jobs in retail will require you to work on your feet for long periods. Tell the interviewer you do not have a problem with this. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

13. How did you find this job?

  • Interviewers ask this question because they want to hire someone specific in their job hunt.
  • Employers want to hire someone who knows what they want. Therefore, state you have been actively monitoring jobs on the company’s website and are happy to get the interview.
  • Note you have to be honest when answering this question as they may already know how you applied for this position.

14. How do you approach greeting and assisting customers in a retail environment?

  • State that you would greet the customer with a warm hello and a smile. Then, you would ask if they needed assistance in finding anything. If they simply wanted to browse, you would respect their preference. However, if they require help, you would gladly assist them in finding what they need.

  • State that during periods when you are not assisting customers, you will always take the time to ensure the store is clean and the inventory is properly organized. Emphasize the belief that a first impression is everything, and note that a negative initial impression can adversely affect sales.
