  • While it’s acceptable to discuss your hobbies and interests during an interview, it’s best to keep such discussions brief. Instead, prioritize discussing related work experience as it can help you stand out from the competition.

2. Why do you want to work for H-E-B?

  • Say you love the product and the service you get at H-E-B and because of this, you would be proud to represent them.
  • Mention you would be proud to work for a company that donates five percent of pre-tax profits to charity.

3. Why should H-E-B hire you?

  • Highlight related work experience in customer service, or retail and how you can apply this experience to benefit H-E-B.
  • State you have excellent communication skills which will allow you to work well with customers and other co-workers.
  • Mention you work well under pressure and are a quick learner.

4. What hours can you work?

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more relaxed you are with your hours, the better your chance of landing the job.
  • State that you understand if you need to work on weekends and holidays. 

5. What do you like most about your current or last job?

  • Unfortunately, this can be a trick question as they may be looking for things you didn’t like in your last job.
  • The best answer is to say that you enjoyed everything about your last job, however, you feel that you have learned all you can in that role and are now looking for new challenges.

  • H-E-B is an American supermarket chain based in San Antonio, Texas, with more than 350 stores throughout Texas and northeastern Mexico.
  • H-E-B stands for Howard E. Butt who was the founder.
  • H-E-B acquired Favor Delivery as a wholly-owned subsidiary in February 2018.
  • As of 2022, the company has a total revenue surpassing $38.9 billion.
  • H-E-B produces many of its own-brand products, including milk, ice cream, bread, snacks, and ready-cooked meats and meals.

The company does business in five different retail formats:
1) General H-E-B Stores.
2) Central Market (an upscale organic and fine foods retailer).
3) H-E-B Plus (sells more than just food items such as entertainment and other general merchandise).
4) Mi Tienda (a Latino themed store).
5) Joe V’s Smart Shop (a brand featuring discount items).

7. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long at checkout.
  • The grocery store is clean both inside and outside.
  • Inventory is well stocked and supplied.
  • Customers receive friendly and helpful service.

8. Can you tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which, in turn, generates more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

Here are two examples

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it, and I was able to get it for them
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain, and one day, there was a senior citizen at the restaurant who had finished his meal. It started to rain, and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had one, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

9. Why do you believe customer service is so important?

Great customer service can

  • Increase customer loyalty
  • Grow the amount of money each customer spends per visit
  • Increase how often a customer buys from you
  • Generate positive word-of-mouth about your business

10. How would you deal with a difficult customer?

  • Listen and let the customer vent.
  • Show the customer you care.
  • Don’t blame the customer or the company.
  • Try to solve the problem or find someone who can.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

The only answer to this question is to say that you have learned all you can from your last job and are looking for new opportunities to learn and grow in your career.

Here is a recommended answer:

  • “I enjoyed my last job, however, I felt growth was minimal and I was no longer learning. I want to explore new challenges”.   

Don’t Say

  • Anything negative about your former boss/employer.
  • Complaints about the salary.
  • You left on bad terms.

13. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Interviewers ask this question because they want to see you have goals and ambitions. Interviewers also ask this question because they want to see if you are a good fit for the industry.

Possible Answers are

  • Have a look at other jobs in retail and find a position you can see yourself doing in five years.
  • If going to college or university state what you plan on doing when you finish. If possible state how working at H-E-B will help you reach your career goals.

14. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe the skills and experience you have that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore, review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

15. What is your greatest weakness?

Don’t Say

  • You don’t have a weakness.
  • You can’t think of a weakness.
  • Something unrelated to the job. 
  • Do not state a weakness that is critical for the job. 

Do Say

  • Something related to the job but not a deal breaker. 
  • Steps to improve your weakness. 

Example

My greatest weakness is I take criticism too personally. I have learned not to overreact and think about what was said. I have found that I have become a better employee when I learn from feedback.

H-E-B Interview Dress Code

Entry-Level

  • Dress business casually if you are interviewing for an entry-level position.  Do not wear shorts and avoid wearing jeans.

Management

  • Dress formally or business casually if you are interviewing for a management position.  Blazers and dark pants are a safe choice, as well as wrap dresses for females. Avoid sportswear clothes.  

Colors

  • Blue tells employers that you’re credible and trustworthy.
  • Black shows leadership and is great if you’re going for a senior position.
  • Red sends a message that you’re assertive and works well in fields like sales.
  • Orange is apparently the worst color to wear for a job interview, with it being linked to unprofessionalism.
